Recent research shows that more streets in the country are being named after different bird species.
The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) conducted a study and found a significant increase in the number of streets in new developments with names like Skylark, Starling, and Swift.

Despite the rise in street names, many of these bird species are actually declining in the wild.
The RSPB hopes that more measures will be taken to protect wildlife and their habitats.

The research, carried out by the RSPB using data from the Ordnance Survey mapping agency for the years 2004 to 2024, revealed a substantial increase in streets named after bird species.
The study found that streets named after skylarks saw a 350% increase, while other species like starlings, lapwings, swifts, puffins, and nightingales were also on the rise.

Unfortunately, all these species are on the red list of conservation concern and their numbers have decreased in the UK over the years.
For example, the population of skylarks has decreased by 53% in the past 50 years.

Dr Amir Khan, the President of the RSPB, emphasized the importance of taking action to support bird species and their habitats despite the increase in street names inspired by nature.
