Professor Michele Dougherty will advise King Charles III on space exploration and the study of the universe.

She is currently working with the European Space Agency on a probe to investigate Jupiter's moons for signs of life.

The role of Astronomer Royal was first created in 1675 by King Charles II.
It is now held by Prof Catherine Heyman in Scotland and Prof Dougherty in the UK.

Science is becoming more diverse with the appointment of female astronomers.
The position is no longer linked to the Royal Observatory since 1972.
