A collection of over 200 love letters from a couple during World War II is digitally on display at the Nashville Public Library.
The letters tell the story of William Raymond Whittaker and Jane Dean's courtship and marriage, shedding light on their love during wartime.
Whittaker, known as Ray, met Jane at the historically Black Meharry Medical College in Tennessee. They lost touch when he was drafted into the Army.
The library has Jane's reply to Ray's letter, where she expresses pleasant surprise at his contact and her worries about uncertain war conditions.
The letters reveal how their relationship evolved, leading to Ray proposing to Jane and them getting married in Birmingham while he was stationed at Fort McClellan in Alabama.
Despite being apart, Jane expresses her love for Ray in their letters, hoping for a time when they can be together forever.
