Dutch Master's Paintings Return Home After Century Overseas

Theworks, paintedaround1628, mayhaveusedHals'ownchildrenasmodels, makingthemofsignificantculturalimportance.

TheFransHalsMuseumandMauritshuismuseumwillshareownershipofthepaintingsandwilldisplaytheminturn, beginningthisJuly.

The Netherlands is welcoming back a pair of paintings by Dutch Golden Age master Frans Hals.

Both paintings, 'Boy Playing the Violin' and 'Girl Singing,' were purchased at auction for $7.8 million by two museums with the support of the Dutch government and foundations.

The works, painted around 1628, may have used Hals' own children as models, making them of significant cultural importance.

The Frans Hals Museum and Mauritshuis museum will share ownership of the paintings and will display them in turn, beginning this July.

This return of artwork is not new to the Netherlands, as they previously jointly purchased works by Rembrandt van Rijn and have a custody agreement for swapping the paintings every five years.
