When cicadas are young, they live underground.

Once they’re fully grown, they climb out of the ground in a big, buzzing group called a brood.
This year’s group is called Brood XIV.

This brood emerges every 17 years.
Cicadas might be loud, but they’re not dangerous.

They don’t bite or sting.
They provide food for birds and promote healthy soil.
