Westminster Abbey holds special service for VE Day anniversary

A special thanksgiving service has been held at Westminster Abbey to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
The service included a two-minute silence at midday, commemorating Victory in Europe Day, which occurred on 8 May 1945.

It is a significant time for many worldwide, as it marked the end of the fighting against Nazi Germany in Europe during World War II.
Approximately 1,800 guests attended the service, among them the King and Queen, the prime minister, and numerous veterans.

Members of the Royal Family, including the Prince and Princess of Wales, were also present.
The King laid a wreath at the tomb of the Unknown Warrior, who represents an unknown British soldier from the First World War.

The choir of Westminster Abbey sung throughout the service, while several speeches and prayers were delivered. Sir Keir Starmer also read from the Bible.
10-year-old Alexander Churchill, the great-great-grandson of Prime Minister Winston Churchill, lit a special candle during the service.

Young attendees gave white roses to the veterans present, while a final blessing concluded the ceremony.
Overall, 78 veterans, some of whom are over 100 years old, were in attendance and met with members of the Royal Family.
After the service, the Prince and Princess of Wales laid flowers at the Innocent Victims' Memorial in remembrance of those who have suffered globally. The flowers were picked from Windsor Castle and its surrounding estate.
