Scouts Introduce New Digital Citizen Badge Activities

Theactivitiesaimtohelpteachchildrenagedeightto14howtobetterprotecttheirdevicesandkeeptheirdatasafeonline.

Todothis, ScoutshaveteamedupwithexpertsatGCHQ'sNationalCyberSecurityCentre (NCSC) -agovernmentorganisationwhohelpstoprotecttheUKfromcyberattacks.

Speakingaboutthenewactivities, SallyMilner, Scoutpartnershipmanager, said:"In 2024, it'sjustasimportanttoknowhowtokeepyourdatasafeasitistoworkinateamornavigateusingamap; it'sourmissiontohelpyoungpeopledevelopallthesekeyskills, andotherssotheyarefullyequippedtoliveandoperateeffectivelyinthemodernworld."

The Scouts have launched four new badge activities as part of their Digital Citizen Badge.

The activities aim to help teach children aged eight to 14 how to better protect their devices and keep their data safe online.

To do this, Scouts have teamed up with experts at GCHQ's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) - a government organisation who helps to protect the UK from cyber attacks.

This month is Cyber Security Awareness Month, and Scouts hope the new activities will help young people to pick up good cyber-security habits.

The four activities will include: How to make a strong password, How to spot phishing emails, Understanding key cyber security principles, Understanding the importance of regularly backing up data.

Speaking about the new activities, Sally Milner, Scout partnership manager, said: "In 2024, it's just as important to know how to keep your data safe as it is to work in a team or navigate using a map; it's our mission to help young people develop all these key skills, and others so they are fully equipped to live and operate effectively in the modern world."

Deputy director for economy and society at the NCSC, Sarah Lyons, said: "Empowering young people with the skills to navigate the digital world safely is crucial."

By equipping Scouts with essential knowledge about online safety, we help ensure they can protect themselves against cyber threats and make informed choices in an increasingly digital society.
