The National Museum of African American History and Culture will change its exhibit later this month by removing a remnant from a sunken slave ship.

The remnant, a timber piece from the slave ship São José-Paquete de Africa, has been displayed in the 'Slavery and Freedom' exhibit since 2016.

It will be prepared for transport back to its home museum in South Africa.

The timbre piece has been on loan to the museum since 2016 and was initially intended for a five-year display, later extended to ten years.

Due to its delicate nature, a special crate will be built for its transportation.

Meanwhile, other items from the ship, including ballasts, will remain on display and are set to be returned in the following two years.

A detailed cargo manifesto from the ship will replace the timber piece in the exhibit.

The final day for visitors to see the timber piece will be on March 22.

The São José, a Portuguese slave ship, sank off the coast of Cape Town in 1794 with over 400 captives on board.

Recovered in 2015, it was identified through the Slave Wrecks Project as a part of the trans-Atlantic slave trade remnants.

The exhibit focuses on the slave trade, conditions of transport, and the middle passage where many died.

There is no precise count, but it is said that millions lost their lives during the journey.

The change in the exhibit comes amidst scrutiny of historical displays in public spaces under President Trump's administration.

The alteration is related to a loan agreement, and is part of efforts to conserve the ship remnant.

Recent visitors have expressed the emotional impact of the exhibit, reflecting on the dark history of slavery.
