Ofcom has announced new rules to help children have safer experiences online.
The rules are aimed at preventing children from viewing harmful or inappropriate content on social media and gaming platforms used by young people in the UK.

The technology companies will have to implement changes by 25 July 2025 to meet the new safety standards or they may face fines.
The new rules require approval from the UK parliament and will become part of the broader online safety laws called The Online Safety Act.

The rules give Ofcom the power to enforce the laws and take action against companies that do not comply.
There are over 40 guidelines that tech companies must adhere to, including changing algorithms to filter harmful content and providing support to children who come across harmful content.

The rules do not ban children from using social media but require companies to enforce age limits and protect child users.
The NSPCC welcomed the rules but urged Ofcom to do more, especially regarding private messaging apps that are often encrypted.

Ofcom stated that their rules are a significant step forward in protecting children online and will continue to evolve in the changing online landscape.
